Do You Know The Pests Around You?
Sometimes, we forget that our environment is composed of living creatures besides human beings. All around us, birds, insects, and wild animals thrive in their own right. Unfortunately, our worlds often interact in challenging circumstances. While you may believe in animal rights, and understand the impact bees have on our world, sharing a habitat is arguably dangerous for both species involved.
When it comes to pest control, understanding bug behavior is the first step. You need to learn how to identify pests, understand their habits, habitats, and use this information to control them in your home.
For instance, you have probably dealt with a housefly infestation at one point in your home. The specific houseflies you encounter are Musca domestica. These flies thrive in sewage, bins, toilets, and grime, hence the general repulsion. House flies are synanthropic, which means that they thrive where humans thrive if you’re planning to avoid houseflies forever, go where human beings don’t exist. It’s harder than it sounds, which is why control measures exist.
It’s not only houseflies that thrive among us. Other common pests such as ticks, fleas, bedbugs and mosquitoes are also synanthropic organisms. So what else don’t you know about pests that pester you?
Bedbugs, for instance, do not discriminate. Despite being associated with poor living conditions, it’s essential to know that bed bugs can attack any house, no matter how small or big. They can thrive in the palaces, hotels, libraries, movie theaters and cars. They are hard little bugs and have been known to survive in freezing and hot temperatures up to 122 degrees.
What’s perhaps worse is that bedbugs are smart and elusive. Don’t let their name deceive you. Bedbugs will hide under lampshades, behind cupboards, and between timber. While they’re generally nocturnal, they will bite you during the day if you adjust your sleeping schedule.
Did you know that rats' teeth never stop growing? These rodents can grow up to five inches on their front teeth, but probably saw them down when they gnaw through food, metal and wood. Just like houseflies, rats enjoy human food, hence their prevalence. So, you might not avoid an infestation throughout your life, but you’re better off keeping them out.
