Want to Get Rid of Household Pests For Good?

Why One Time Treatments For Pests Do Not Work

Are you trying to get rid of troublesome pests such as ants, rodents, termites or bed bugs from your home? Is nothing working to help you get things back in order?

Pests in the home can cause serious issues. When they come into your space, the biggest issue that they bring with them is their persistence. While it might seem as though you have the infestation under control after a pest treatment, they can often return with a vengeance, even with the most powerful pest exterminator.

In this guide, we will look into the reasons why one time treatments do not work to eradicate your pests for good.

Why Do We Get Pests?

There’s a whole manner of reasons why we get pests, but simply put, the reason they want to take up dwelling in our homes is that the environment is inviting to them.

All organisms like to find the optimal conditions to thrive and reproduce. They will search for a place for warmth, to feed and have shelter,  which for many- is our home.

Some pests come into your home because the foods they enjoy are in greater supply in homes than out in the wild, where competition to access that food is higher.

Mice and ants are two creatures that are able to survive on supplies such as our leftovers, pet food, and crumbs.

Ants will feed at an opportunistic level. Their food intake can include dead insects, grains, fruits, vegetables, and deceased members of ant colonies.
Specific ants have different preferences for what they eat, though- some prefer to opt for protein-rich greasy foods, while others like fungus or sweet foods.

Birdseed can be a breeding ground for moths and beetles, so this should be kept in a sealed plastic container to help to minimize contamination.

Common household bugs that take up residency in your home will often do so on a seasonal basis. This is because the conditions inside the home are inviting to them, and particularly changing environments within the home.

Fruit flies, for example, can be brought into the home via ripened fruit and may hatch if they are kept in the right conditions. Fruit flies will continue to breed if they find desirable breeding conditions where food is involved- this can be from leftover coffee grounds to overripe fruit or even unwashed dishes. Two fruit flies can soon make thousands, so it’s best to remove any variables that will create an environment for them to thrive.

 ‘Have You Tried...? ‘

When faced with an issue you don’t know how to deal with, your first port of call may be to go online, or to ask people you know for advice.

They may swear by certain home-use pesticides, biological pest control, acids, soapy water, bait traps, or all of the above.

You might try many of the DIY solutions that you come across in an attempt to get rid of them. Laying out humane rodent traps in order to then release them into the wild, or sticky strips that attract and trap flies, deep cleaning carpets and mattresses to get rid of mites- but they just keep coming back.

Pests that find themselves in the home and workspace, they bring with them a whole range of issues. You want to get rid of them once and for all, so you can protect yourself and your family from being affected by the health risks that some of these pests can bring with them.

Not only that but certain infestations, such as termites, can cause lasting damage to your home.

Maybe the last resort was to call out a professional pest exterminator to get the job done. They went for a while, but they still keep coming back and causing issues within the property.

Why Pest Control?

Insects, rodents, and birds are known for the ability to contaminate food and surfaces as well as spreading diseases.

Additionally, rodents can cause an awful lot of structural damage to properties, such as fires from chewing away at the insulation from wires, floods through gnawing at water pipes, and can even cause fatalities by puncturing holes in gas pipes causing leaks throughout the home.

Bird nests can block chimneys and gutters causing long term damage, as well as attracting other pests.

But with so many more humane options for getting rid of pests in the home, you may wonder why you would need to enlist the expert help of pest control.

This is because, without the professional expertise of a trained cockroach exterminator, who is trained to eradicate pest problems, the problem is likely to persist.

A key reason for this is that they are fully trained to identify the correct stage of their development and to know how to target each stage to help to get rid of the problem altogether. Pest control companies are needed to help not just the structure of our homes, but the health of our loved ones.

One-Time Pest Control Treatments Do Not Work

However,  just using pest control services one time will not rid you of your pest problem altogether. Here’s why.

You May Not Have Interrupted the Life Cycle of the Pest

No matter the species, pests are living things that continuously reproduce. This means that even if you manage to trap and get rid of one single mouse, there’s still likely to be a family, and possibly extended family of them making their home in yours.

You may be able to kill one single ant by throwing a slipper at it, but there’s still the rest of the colony waiting to collect scraps of food left on the dining table after a meal.

Lice may be suffocated and killed with one treatment, but they still laid thousands of eggs that are not impacted by the chemicals used to kill the lice. This is why one treatment will not fully get rid of the problem.

The only way to get rid of pests once and for all is to interrupt their life cycle.

Every living organism goes through a life cycle. In order to get rid of pests, it is essential to understand how their particular life cycle works before breaking that cycle.

This is why multiple, targeted pest control treatments need to happen over the series of several months.

What is the Life Cycle of Common Pests?

Note: Bed bugs take 3-10 minutes to complete feeding

The life cycle of a pest is the time it takes for a pest to mature from an egg and all of the stages in between. Most will go through three definite stages of maturation: Growth, Maturation, and Reproduction.

Growth

After the egg has been laid, it goes through the growth stage. Pests with shorter lifespans will experience rapid growth from egg to their reproduction stage. A good example of this is common mice- who mature to their reproductive potential very quickly.

Other insects, such as bed bugs go through 5 larva stages before reaching full maturity. In the case of bedbugs, their rate of growth depends on how many blood feeds they get before they start to reproduce their own eggs.

Maturation

Following the initial growth stage, insects will then go through their juvenile stage. This could take a matter of days or a few months. Sub-adult insects are like pre-pubescent adults. They may share some of the same features of a mature adult, but they look physically different. Most importantly, however, they have not yet reached reproductive maturity.

This happens over a certain amount of time, however, some external factors such as heat can speed up the process at this stage. It’s not a coincidence when you notice more bugs and spiders around the summer, particularly when it’s been a hot few months.

Reproduction

A pest will have completed their full life cycle when they reach their full maturity and begin to reproduce offspring. Some pests have the capacity to reproduce several generations of offspring throughout their lifespan- which could last several years. The Wolf Spider is a good example of pests whose bloodline strengthens over time. All the more a good reason to control the population of your pests as they continue to grow exponentially.

In order to get rid of pests for life, it is important to work out how to interrupt this life cycle and prevent them from reproducing again.

There’s only so much good that keeping your home clean and tidy will do when it comes to pest control. While blocking off their access to supplies such as food and shelter is a good way of preventing infestation, to begin with, having multiple pest control treatments will ensure that you are rid of your problem for life.
